Good suggestion regarding siyam.

Anita raised a very interesting point about siyam today in Quranology Discussions. She asked ‘what does stopping eating and drinking have to do with becoming muttaqee/righteous’ (as per 2/183). This is a very incisive question, I think.

Stopping eating and drinking (specifically experiencing the joys of life) for a while and focussing on achieving some good for those around you – i.e. stop what you do for yourself and do something righteous for others is what I take this to be… siyam is not just about stopping to eat and drink – it holds that meaning too…
Because self-restraint is a key to righteousness.
